OPPORTUNITIES TO GET INVOLVED
Bulletin board maintenance / mural crew
Thanks to the building owners, the window-space just left to the Parkway Theater is a dedicated community board and mural space for the community, to be run by I Like The Parkway. Interested in helping maintain this space? Email
Translators
Chinese and Vietnamese translators are needed to spread the Parkway love to the local community! There is a large asian representation in the communities surrounding the Parkway Theater, and with the theatre's closure, we want to make sure that different ethnic groups are aware of the ramifications to the local neighborhoods and businesses, and are able to have a voice and add to the collective efforts to re-open the theater. If you can help translate written copy and potentially be a point-person to a represented ethnic group, let us know at
Press liaisons
The function of the Press Liaison and the volunteers they manage includes but is not limited to the following: maintaining contact with the press, keeping track of any press contact information that comes to the group via Facebook by checking the discussion boards daily for updates, updating press contact info as necessary, and setting up interviews for the organizers. The Press Liaison's primary responsibility is to manage the relationship between the organizers and the press. They will work directly with Peter Prato, reaching out to the other organizers as necessary. 1-2 volunteers needed - email
Petition volunteers
We are continuing to request signatures from residents around Lake Merritt who are concerned about the Parkway Theater closure - if you're able to take some time to go to Farmers Markets, local businesses, etc. to collect signatures, email
Building Restoration Team
The function of the Building Restoration Team will be to develop a relationship with all city parties that can inform us on the information regarding the cost of renovations, maintenance, and all other relevant issues in the building. This team will compile and relay any and all necessary information gathered on this front. They will be responsible for working directly with Naomi Schiff who serves on the board of The Oakland Heritage Alliance as well as Betty Mervin at CEDA (Community Economic and Development Agency) who serves as a Planner at the Oakland Cultural Heritage Survey. 2-3 volunteers needed - email
Moviehouse business model researchers
A group is needed to research small theater business models by talking to managers and owners and seeking interest in potential franchisers. In-field research will also be conducted: user experience, what works and what doesn't, etc. Samples to investigate include the PFA, the Roxie, The Red Vic, the Kabuki, other hybrid cafes/entertainment businesses (the Brainwash, Sit and Spin, Borders, the Paramount). UPDATE: Volunteer maximum hit! Please contact only if you have directly pertinent information -
Foundation Research for the Parkway
This group will be investigating the nonprofit and foundation routes for the Parkway. What would we have to do to run the Parkway as a nonprofit? Can we start a foundation to collect money to assist whatever the new Parkway becomes? What can we spend foundation money on and how do we collect it? This will involve some research into California laws. No experience necessary. Will be conducted primarily online. UPDATE: Volunteer maximum hit! Please contact only if you have directly pertinent information -
